Temenos: A Family Journal 2024
Fifteen years have passed since we loaded up our
three kids in Downeast Maine, locked the door, and moved to Greece, for what
was intended as a one year sabbatical in a sleep fishing village on the
Mediterranean.
In that year—2009–this family blog was born in
a magical and storied place in the southwestern Peloponnese, where the Aegean
meets the Ionian Sea, beside a strip of white sand and cobalt sea in a village
called Finikounda.
Our residence there was transformative in several ways. Most of all, an old vision was reborn, an ill-defined dream that extended back thirty years to a time when owning a little house in Greece seemed the stuff of fantasy.
In that year—sadly reduced to five months,
owing to an ailing parent in America who needed our help—the dream became a
passion. And then an obsession—living in the land that my grandparents left
behind one hundred years earlier, in search of a better life.
Now the circle has been completed. Nearly.
