Our house..with two goats in the yard...life used to be so hard

Jonathan set off for a six-kilometer run at about 9 a.m, too late to beat the heat, but he did managed to cool off with a swim at Anemomilos beach. A tour of Yioryio's garden and and an introduction to his goats followed, and then the two of us visited the house project, which is now well along--tomorrow we will hook up the water. Jonathan spent the afternoon burying the exposed water lines with red earth. The vision includes a loft with two beds, cabinets for blankets and pillows, a covered veranda on the west and south sides of the house, and the plantings--oranges, lemons, olives, palm, and some ornamentals. It is all very exciting...if not slightly unreal.

The windows and interior doors will be installed on Monday, courtesy of Dimitri, the ksilouryos (carpenter), whose work is first-rate. The blacksmith in Lahanada is fabricating wrought iron guards for the exterior windows.

Yioryio and Jonathan collected fresh almonds from the absentee neighbor's trees, which we smashed open with a rock and enjoyed in the shade. An adjacent piece of land, too small to build on, may be available as garden space, which is an intriguing idea.

Yioryio's daughter, Yiota, prepared an excellent noontime meal of kalamari and pasta, with fresh bread, olive oil, cheese, grapes, figs, and a thick cup of Turkish coffee.

The rest of the afternoon was spent on the beach, reading the Herald Tribune while the fighter jets practiced their sorties overhead. Beauty and lunacy meet over the wine-blue Mediterranean.

Οταν πεθαινω...θαυτε μου. Αμαν, αμαν...
