Greece and the burning house
Someone told Jonathan recently
that traveling to Greece in June 2015 is akin to running into a burning house.
The house is Greece and the blaze is likely inextinguishable. And yet there is
that conscious choice to embrace the hopeless cause––by grabbing a large glass
of water and advancing forward.
As
for analogies, this one has special resonance for Jonathan, who (among other things) serves as a
captain in the fire service.
And so this occasional journal of
life in Greece reemerges for thirty-four days, rising above the heat and the smoke,
pushing aside the world’s bemused news-weary spectators, in search of the
remnants of a life that once was and still may be.
After all, isn’t hubris a Greek word?
